We couldn't find a matcha worth drinking every day.
So we started sourcing our own. We're May and Seng, and this is how Ensoo began.
It started with two minutes in the morning.
We both work in healthcare, where most days move quickly and rarely go exactly as planned.
Somewhere along the way, making matcha became our little morning ritual. Two quiet minutes before the day began. Whisking, pouring, taking that first sip.
It was something small, but it became something we genuinely looked forward to.
And that's where Ensoo really started.
The more matcha we drank, the more curious we became.
We started trying different matcha and hojicha and quickly realised how much the quality could vary. Some were beautifully smooth, rich and naturally sweet. Others were bitter, dull, or simply something we didn't reach for again.
So, we started paying attention.
We tried more. Compared them. Kept notes. Learned what we liked and, probably more importantly, what we didn't.
We weren't trying to build a business.
We were simply trying to find tea we genuinely loved drinking.
Eventually, our search led us to Uji, Kyoto, a place known for generations for its tea.
We found growers whose matcha and hojicha were exactly what we'd been looking for: smooth, rich, balanced and something we wanted to drink every day.
So, we kept ordering it for ourselves.
Then our friends and family tried it.
They started asking:
“Where can I get this?”
After hearing that enough times, the idea for Ensoo began to feel pretty simple.
If this was something we loved having in our own home, maybe other people would love it too.
We only sell what we drink ourselves.
That idea still guides Ensoo today. We don't want an endless range just for the sake of having one. Everything we offer is something we'd happily make for ourselves, serve to our friends, and keep in our own cupboard.
Ensoo was never meant to make matcha complicated. It's about a good cup of tea and a small moment in the day that feels like yours.
